This is a late 1700s fine shagreen travel etui, case, or scent caddy. The 3 remaining (of 4 originally) scent bottles are each capped in 18k gold (tested and marked with tiniest French punch), along with the original matching 18k gold funnel in it's mount. The 4th 18k gold cap is with the set, but its flacon (bottle) must have been broken over the 250 years or so since it was created. The
